JUNIOR CONSERVATOR OF PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIALS

The Paper & Photo Conservation Studio (Conservation & Science Department) is seeking a:

Junior Conservator of Photographic Materials- temporary (M/F/X)

36 hours per week, for 1 year

The position
The purpose of the function is to efficiently and effectively keep and or bring art objects in good condition. In this role you will be involved in the conservation and restoration of photos. Preserving the collection of photographs by Ed van der Elsken acquired in the recent past is the most important task in the position.

Currently, the paper and photo conservation team consists of the head of paper conservation, two paper conservators, two photograph conservators and three conservation technicians, with other conservators and interns being employed on a project basis.

The main tasks of the candidates are

• To perform conservation and restoration following instructions, including keeping written and photographic conservation documentation following professional standards;
• To house and mount photographs using safe methods for storage, exhibition and examination in the study room;
• To contribute to the development of conservation methods and to perform research on any type of photograph;
• To assist in monitoring the physical condition of the collection in order to recognize (possible) decay in a timely manner and to take remedial action accordingly;
• To contribute to different projects in the museum by attending meetings and participating in development, execution and related administration.

Requirements

• An academic degree (MA) in the conservation of photographs
• A minimum of one year of practical treatment experience in the conservation and restoration of photographs from a variety of periods
• Knowledge of current methods on the conservation of photographs and conservation documentation
• A spoken and written command of the Dutch language (or a willingness to learn Dutch in the short term) and a command of English
• Familiarity with MS Office and Collection Management Systems

Terms and conditions of employment
The gross monthly salary will be commensurate with education and experience, from a minimum of € 3.099 to a maximum of € 4.053 (scale 10), for a full working week of 36 hours, excluding 8% holiday allowance and end-of-year benefits. The Museum CAO applies. Appointment is for the duration of one year. Travel expenses commuting by public transport are reimbursed for 100% from a commuting distance of 5 km one way.
